Mission Trip FAQ's

As I was reviewing the suggested packing list, I also came across some FAQ's with some interesting info about the upcoming mission trip.

Where do we stay?
We stay at Hotel Don Carlos. It is a hotel in the city of Higuey, about 20 minutes by taxi to the work site. It is located in the center of the city near the cathedral.

Is the hotel nice?
It is not the Ritz but it is the best in town. It has running water (not necessarily hot) to shower, air conditioning, electricity and television (fuzzy and a few stations). It's safe and clean.

What is the tempature this time of year?
It is in the high 90's with high humidity.

What will we be doing?
We will be finishing the interior of the chicken coop and breaking ground for the vocations center.

What do we bring?
There is a packing list included in our volunteer packs.

I don't speak Spanish. Is this a problem?
No. There are people who can effectively speak and understand Spanish to accomplish the goals of the trip. Despite the language barrier, the people are extremely kind and will often use gestures and hand motions to communicate.

I'm not strong or physically fit. Is this OK?
Yes. Everyone has his/her own unique gifts and talents. Some may be good at pouring cement, some at painting, some at carpentry, some at electrical work, and some at sorting, organizing and distributing clothes. The important thing is to recognize your God-given talents and use these talents to help the poorest of the poor.

What about the intense heat an safety during the day?
Hydration is essential! Don't try to be a hero. If you don't feel well, tell someone, take a break and get out of the heat. There are several people certified in CPR and first aid. There is a first aid kit on hand at all times.

Is there a hospital or healthcare available?
Yes. There is an out-patient center about ten minutes from the hotel and twenty minutes from the worksite. An American Credit Card will get us access to care.

What will we eat and drink?
This will be our fifth trip to the Dominican Republic. We have developed a network of places and food sources that are both nutritious and safe. Be assured that you will be fed enjoyable food. If you cooperate and follow directions, our hope is that everyone will remain healthy!
